Fire in cable terminal box causes power failure

11-04-2009

At 09.50 a.m. on Saturday 11 April, a power failure occured on the NorNed cable linking the Netherlands to Norway. Shortly before 10 a.m., a fire was detected in the cable terminal box at the Eemshaven converter station. The fire brigade has brought the fire under control and will let it burn out in a controlled manner. The cause of the power failure and the fire are as yet unknown.

The NorNed cable is the world's longest undersea high-voltage cable. It connects the Dutch and Norwegian electricity grids and was completed in May 2008. The cable will be made available to the market once the repair work is completed.
